Breast reduction or surgical is actually defined by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons as reconstructive surgery, rather than cosmetic surgery. Many women with oversized breasts complain of back and neck pain, discomfort when wearing a bra, and show gouges where bra straps have dug into their flesh. Too large breasts can also cause skin irritation under the breast skin and even inflammation and infection in that area. Many insurance companies will cover the cost of this operation if it can be proven that the woman has health issues based on the size of her breasts.
A standard breast reduction involves a surgical procedure that can last up to four hours. The excess breast tissue is removed, the breast is then lifted and the nipple is relocated to create symmetry. There is usually some amount of scarring, sometimes extensive. The aftercare is intensive.
The general rule for a breast reduction is that women who need 800 grams or less removed from their breasts are good candidates. These women are plagued with back problems (poor alignment) muscle strain and neck problems. A breast reduction eliminates the pain bringing relief. If the woman has rashes or small bumps under her breasts, she would also be a good candidate for a breast reduction. She also has to be in good health, a non-smoker and have realistic expectations about the surgery and its results.
A mammogram is often done prior to a breast reduction, so as to have a baseline to compare future results to. As with other operations, lab tests will be required as well.
If you undergo breast reduction, you will receive some sort of anesthesia, possibly general anesthesia. Incisions will be made to each breast, usually around the nipple. The scars will be visible, but usually in an area that is well covered by any bra or bikini top. Breast tissue is removed all around and the nipple, which is usually kept attached to the blood vessels and underlying tissue, is re-positioned accordingly. Each breast is reduced in size, reshaped and lifted.
It may take several days or weeks for swelling to reduce so you will be able to see the results (although you should be able to see a change right away, depending on how much tissue was removed).
Breast reduction carries with it the same risks as any other major operation. Anything from anesthesia risks to scarring, infection and bleeding. Your surgeon should discuss possible risks with you in detail prior to your operation so you can make a decision based on the pros and cons.
